The London Saxophone Quartet
- The Classical Saxophone
Chris founded the London Saxophone Quartet in
1969 and with his quartet colleagues organised the Fifth World
Saxophone Congress in London in 1976. From 1969 to 1985 Chris,
together with the leader of the London Saxophone Quartet,
Paul Harvey, championed the classical saxophone. Their efforts
in promoting composition, concerts and recording, with teaching
a high priority, won them international acclaim in the world
of legitimate saxophone playing.
The success of the London Saxphone Quartet throughout
the 1970s with radio and television recordings and concerts
stimulated an ever growing interest among amateur and student
players. More saxophone groups developed across the country
and several British composers started writing serious works
for the instrument.
For 16 years the LSQ played over 70 concerts
per year, plus broadcasts and other events whilst encouraging composition
for and teaching of the saxophone. Many of the professional
players of today were pupils of one or another of the London
Saxophone Quartet.
